Jodo
Jodo is the Japanese art of the short staff against the sword. Jodo was developed by Muso Gonnasukke after being defeated by the famous Myamoto Mushashi some 400 years ago. Realising he could not defeat Mushashi with the sword he developed the art of the short staff after many years of meditation.
The Jo could be used as a sword a shield a spear or a staff and he returned to defeat or draw with Mushashi in a rematch.
Jodo is practised in pairs one person using a wooden sword (tachi) and the second person with the staff (Jo) the main aim of Shindo Muso Ryu jodo is to defeat the opponent without injuring them.
